Zyggurat are the Birmingham-based, outer-space-reaching duo consisting of Pete Grimshaw on modular synth and Nathan Jones on acoustic drums.

Following two EPs, Beyond the Breaks in 2018 and 2020’s Earth II, comes ZYGGURAT; the fully-fledged eponymous album. ZYGGURAT shifts the musical focus from overt studio production to a greater emphasis on free-flowing, improvised modular synth in dialogue with the organic sound of the drums.

It’s limitless music that ascends beyond any confines with all the euphoric spontaneity of a live performance intact. ’We wanted to bring a tangible immediacy and honesty to the approach,’ says Pete Grimshaw. ‘Going into the studio we had no preconceived ideas for structures and the results ranged from loose compositions of sequenced cells to raw improvisations from the session. . .I think this gave us the freedom to feel where the energy was and allowed us to be intuitive about where to take the music at any time.’ The duo stayed loyal to the live takes from the studio with the use of minimal editing so as to transmit this feeling of freedom from the performers to the listener.

Zyggurat combine the technological prowess of the modular synth with an acoustic drum kit and conjure up imageries of the cosmos, urban jungles under city lights, and the forces of the natural world. The album is an all-encompassing ode to the known world and the unknown, and all the spaces in between.

Zyggurat’s debut album continues in the spirit of their last EPs but with deeper explorations into vivid immediacy and imagination, creating an otherworldly yet wonderfully familiar package.
